Software gets materials data under control
Matereality provides a single web-based framework to securely store any kind of materials data on any material, including plastics, rubber, foams and metals
Matereality reckons its software represents a paradigm shift in materials data management (MDM) by providing enterprises with a single web-based framework to securely store any kind of materials data on any material, including plastics, rubber, foams and metals. Besides storing raw data and properties derived from the measurements, Matereality allows diverse output formats ranging from plots and numerical data, to pictures and CAE material model parameters.

Matereality and UGS PLM Software have developed an interface for importing material properties from Matereality into UGS NX Nastran software
Data in Matereality include test and specimen details, and are traceable to their original source, creating a single authoritative 'non-PDF' electronic repository for all materials property data.
'The all-inclusive Matereality framework has inbuilt product development and material behaviour understanding that helps users select the most appropriate material data wherever in the product life cycle their application may lie', says CTO Hubert Lobo, a recognised materials expert in the virtual product development (VPD) arena.
This disruptive technology removes the dependency on multiple partial databases, bringing integration in vertical and horizontal processes of enterprises.
Companies now have the tool to consolidate materials data from multiple locations such as paper, PDF attachments, Excel charts and zipped files, and control how these data are used within their organisations, and by their collaborators.
Globally distributed companies can now compartmentalise and manage their own material data on the same platform from which they access relevant documented material properties from suppliers and others.
Material suppliers can publish or selectively distribute their data instantly across the globe.
Submission of materials to large OEMs for certification becomes automatic and effortless.
CAD/CAE companies can leverage Matereality to pipe-in application-appropriate data models seamlessly, enhancing ease of use and design confidence.
Materials testing labs are using Matereality Data Delivery Service (DDS) to transmit test results to their clients, thus populating it with growing collections of relevant material properties of immediate value for all phases of the product life cycle.

Simulation software gains Catia link
Moldflow Design Link (MDL) provides a geometry data translation interface between Moldflow's range of simulation products and leading CAD systems using standard file formats
Moldflow Design Link (MDL) provides a geometry data translation interface between Moldflow's range of simulation products and leading CAD systems using standard file formats such as Iges, Step, Parasolid and PTC's Pro/Engineer. The newly released Version 4 (MDL 4.0) also supports Dassault Systemes' Catia V5 part files, which are based on the Spatial 3D ACIS Interoperability kernel.

MDL/Catia V5 can be used to import CAD model geometry directly into Moldflow's part and mould design software, Moldflow Plastics Advisers (MPA) and Moldflow Plastics Insight (MPI), reducing the amount of time required to prepare models for analysis.
Design Engineer and early user Mike McCullough from OEM/Erie said: 'We've seen a 10% time saving for importing and meshing files using MDL 4.0.
I can now save a Catia file and read it right into Moldflow software'.
He continued: 'Parts with living hinges, for instance, require very tight meshes in the hinge area.
Further, prior to using MDL 4.0, in order to perform local mesh refinement, I needed regions or surfaces.
The only way to achieve the meshing was to create regions from the meshed entities.
However, in doing so, I lost some of the geometry accuracy if the initial mesh was not dense enough.
Now, using MDL 4.0 surface capability, I can mesh and re-mesh the file as needed and not lose any geometry'.
Other MDL 4.0 enhancements include the ability for MPI users to specify a target mesh size for models that are meshed directly with MDL and support for Parasolid version 14.1 files.
MDL 4.0 supports MPI 4.0 Revision 1, MPI 4.1 and MPA 6.0 Revision 3 or higher.

Composite components and designs are particularly important in the aerospace industry, where the high strength and low weight of the materials allow for increased performance at a reduced cost.
FiberSIM and Pro/ENGINEER will provide users with an environment that links composite design, analysis, tooling and manufacturing.
Using a unique material simulation technology that predicts how composite materials conform to complex surfaces, these tools enable engineers to concurrently balance part geometry, material, and process constraints.
By using FiberSIM with Pro/ENGINEER, engineers can visualize fiber orientations, predict manufacturing problems and take corrective action during design.
This results in shortened product development cycles and improved part performance.
FiberSIM is a suite of software products that transforms CAD systems into high performance environments for designing and manufacturing composite parts.
The FiberSIM product suite includes tools that automate the design process, assess the producibility of a part, and generate manufacturing information including documentation, flat patterns, and data to interface with laser projectors, automated cutters and fiber placement machines.
Consequently, FiberSIM enables users to drive all aspects of preliminary composite design, analysis, detailed design, and manufacturing from within a single CAD master model.
Founded in 1991, Composite Design Technologies, (CDT) is the market leader in creating software solutions for composite design and manufacturing.
CDT was the first company to recognize the need for the unique treatment of composite materials in the CAD environment.
Staffed by engineers who have first-hand, in-depth knowledge of the composites industry, CDT provides world class software, training, and consulting for companies that value the integration of composite design and manufacturing.

Because EnCapta presents the complete design context associated with the geometry, more-informed decisions can be made, resulting in better products going to market faster at lower cost.' About EnCapta EnCapta provides engineering organizations with the capability for building specialized, CAD-integrated design environments that enrich the CAD model as a source of information.
Once engineers capture a complete digital product definition, they can also use EnCapta to distribute this valuable resource to other engineering applications and to the entire product development team.
EnCapta features three main components: customizable templates for defining EnCapta objects, an interactive user interface, and XML tools.
Using customizable templates, engineers define the type and structure of the specialized information they wish to capture.
Data such as design details, cost estimates, engineering change orders, materials specifications, and assembly instructions that are often stored separately from the CAD model can now be captured and managed as objects and linked to the relevant CAD geometry.
Multiple EnCapta objects can reference a single geometric feature, and a single EnCapta object can link to multiple geometric features.
The EnCapta user interface manages all types of specialized non-geometric product information from within the CAD session.
Engineers can browse EnCapta objects and (more) display the associated geometry, or they can select geometry on the CAD model to discover the associated EnCapta data.
EnCapta objects maintain their associative links within the single repository of the CAD model, so there is no need to re-enter data after making design revisions.
Without leaving the modeling environment, engineers can view, edit, sort, and search the design and manufacturing information associated with product geometry.
EnCapta XML tools make it easy to extract specific design information from the CAD model so it can be reported to other systems or databases throughout the enterprise.
As a result, manufacturing, purchasing, quality assurance, and other groups in the organization can receive design data in a format customized for their own use.
Because EnCapta data are associative with the CAD model, information that engineers share electronically with others is always complete and up to date.
Engineers can also use the XML tools to import information from databases and other sources of design data.
